This Wednesday (03/12) I found myself back at my favorite KC venue, The Truman, for my first show of the year. Soccer Mommy finished up her North American tour in KC for her latest album, Evergreen. She brought along opener Hana Vu. The day was a perfect reprieve from the past few months of unbearable cold as the sun had finally come out and many audience members, myself included, took the opportunity to show up early and leave the jacket at home.
I was surprised a bit by the demographic of the audience as it ranged from young girls and their dads to older folks who seemed to have been going to shows long before the young ones were born. These tend to be my favorite though, because it shows the artist their music's ability to reach a wide variety of people and ages. The line for the photobooth (which was finally working again, yay!) was long as everyone waited for the show to begin and opener Hana Vu to take the stage.
Hana Vu’s latest EP Movies features looping guitar riffs and floaty vocals that feel like the perfect soundtrack for a rainy summer morning. The rawness of the EP feels both comfy and homey as it does vulnerable. A comment left on her music video for the song “Care” reads, “I always feel she is one lucky coincidence away from a major breakthrough. Her music is so good.”
I’ll be following along to see what's next for Hana, and definitely felt lucky to have seen her on her first time in KC!
Soccer Mommy, also known as Sophia Allison, took the stage with flowers and colorful lights adorning her stage monitors, the perfect metaphor for her music. A swirling combination of indie and that early 2000’s grunge pop. It’s light and fun but still has a bit of grit or edge. The Nashville raised artist played in school bands, and studied guitar from the age of 6 eventually finding her own style and self-releasing songs online before eventually being signed. Sophia calls on musicians like Mitski and Avril Lavigne as influences in her music and according to her Wiki page, Avril’s 2004 album Under My Skin was the first one she ever owned! Sophia’s latest album Evergreen dropped last year but she also just released a single Driver which really embodies her ability to reflect on what she’s feeling and transform that into song with a vulnerability that makes her so relatable.
Soccer Mommy’s North America tour is coming to a close but be sure to keep an eye out for what both her and Hana Vu do next! Thanks for reading and we'll see you at the next one!
