Alter Bridge & Sevendust: Kings & Pawns Tour

Story and Photos: Spencer Fleming

Alternative rock titans Alter Bridge and Sevendust hit the Stir Cove last week (8/31) to usher in a beautiful Labor Day weekend. With the temperature in the mid-80s and a nice breeze it was the perfect combination for an outdoor show.

Before Sevendust and Alter Bridge Stir Cove was treated to a set from three soulful brothers in the band MJT. Their stage had a display of records from 70s musical icons like Stevie Wonder, Jimi Hendrix, and The Isley Brothers. Drawing on these influences, the three piece slayed the crowd with funky keys, guitars, and drums. Both Alter Bridge and Sevendust sang MJT's praises and with good reason. You could tell these guys were pros with their tight rhythms and soaring harmonies. If you get the chance, check out MJT, you won't be disappointed.

After MJT one of metal's finest hit the stage, the mighty Sevendust!!! I've had the pleasure of shooting photos for Sevendust several times and they always put on a great show. This night was no different. Right from the start Lajon and crew had the crowd on their feet singing along to every word. Sevendust remains one of the most underrated acts out there. You quickly forget how many hits they have! Nearly every song in their set was at one time a radio single.

One after another they churned out the bangers. Towards the end of the set Lajon mentioned that their latest single "Everything" continues to climb the charts thanks to all the fans. With Sevendust coming up on 30 years it's incredible that they still sound amazing and are continuing to put out quality radio-ready songs. With so many hits and a shorter set time, they didn't even have time to play "Praise", "Enemy" or "Broken Down"! Make sure to check out Sevendust's new album Truth Killer on all streaming platforms.

The headliner for the evening Alter Bridge brought the heat! With a dueling guitar attack from Myles Kennedy and Mark Tremonti the crowd was ready for the crunchy riff candy to hit their ears. In a sign of respect, Myles, Mark, and Brian were decked out in Sevendust shirts paying tribute to their tour brothers. Myles stood under the spotlight for the first song before moving about, visiting each side of the stage to throw a pick and wave or the fans.

For over an hour Alter Bridge treated Stir Cove to hit after hit including "Broken Wings", "Burn It Down", "Open Your Eyes", and "Isolation". After a rousing chant of "One more song" the band came back out for "Rise Today". With fists in the air, the band stood triumphantly and thanked the Stir Cove crowd for all the support. It was an incredible evening and I'm super grateful I was there to capture it!

Huge thanks to Alter Bridge and Sevendust management for photo access and Stir Cove for consistently bringing amazing shows. This season has been awesome and I know they'll continue providing high quality entertainment for years to come.
