The Fey on the Road to South by Southwest

Lincoln band The Fey kicked off their “Lost in my Head” tour Friday night (3/8) at Reverb Lounge. Joining the show were Omaha locals Comeback Sandy, J. Crum, and State Disco. The Fey has several stops on their tour including two showcase shows at South by Southwest. Local hip-hop artist J.Crum will be showcasing at South by Southwest as well.

The night kicked off with local rapper/soul singer Comeback Sandy. She had a fun set filled with whimsical rhymes and positive vibes. I really enjoyed the song “Perfect Day.” Sandy raps about meeting a rainbow and asking it’s name to which the rainbow replies “ROYGBIV”. This made me smile.

Next up was the hip-hop/gospel mastermind J. Crum. With a full backing band, J absolutely destroyed the stage.

I’ve come to really love J. Crum’s music over the last six months. His new album “Villains” dropped in early January and it’s a total banger! J started the set off with one of my favorite tracks “Hearts Collide.” With hands clapping and the rhythm bouncing the room was pulsing with positivity. J played a variety of tracks from his previous albums and some from “Villains” which J mentioned is “his best work to date”. You can catch J. Crum with guitarist Anthony Flakus this Friday (3/15) at the Waiting Room for Omaha Unplugged. Tickets are available HERE.

After J. Crum, were local synth rockers State Disco. These guys kept the party going with upbeat pop numbers reminiscent of the Killers. I talked to one fan after their set and he said State Disco “was one of the best bands he’d ever seen”! State Disco really does bring the fun. You can check them out on Spotify or on Facebook.

Finally, it was time for headliners The Fey to rock the crowd.

Mixing up soul and hip-hop The Fey brought the house down! Imagine if the Black Keys and Alabama Shakes added an upbeat hip-hop element and you would get The Fey.

The band has been making steady progress over the last few years including 3 E.P.s and several tours. With their latest trek taking the band to South by Southwest hopefully The Fey can attract the attention of a major record label. I could see them getting an offer for distribution or a tour support slot. They would make a great opener for the Black Keys! They have a new album on the way, so who knows. Best of luck to the Fey in Austin!
